Thanks, I am familiar with ifconfig, but wasn't thinking of counting the packets, I have typically used it for seeing which interface has what IP assigned.

I have both ethernet and Wi-Fi in use on my Zumspot/Pi 3.
Both interfaces are up and am able to login to both.
When I am linked to a D-Star reflector, how do I know if it is using the Ethernet or Wi-Fi interface for communications?

It tries to do something but doesn't connect with the radio saying linking to XLX922E afterwards. if you leave it or switch to 'Use Reflector' on the radio then every few moments the radio says 'linking to XLX922E'.... so feinitly this does not work. I have selected XLX922 E from within the Pi-Star...

Have a look at Menu SPEECH in the ID51, it could be something in there or perhaps a confirmation beep on the hotspot. I checked the SPEECH settings in both radios and they are set the same. This is only happening on the ID-51A and not on the ID-5100A, so I don't think the speech setting is the issu...

No, it isn't beaconing, as far as I can tell it's not transmitting, it's just announcing it locally.
