Pi4 - Will pistar run on it?

Post by kd6ftr » Mon Jun 24, 2019 6:46 pm

Hello.

I just read the ARS Technica article (https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/06 ... rformance/) about the newest addition to the Raspberry Pi family.

Based on the architecture, it appears that Pi-Star should run on it. It's got the same 40-pin GPIO and ARM processor and 1, 2 or 4 GB RAM along with a USB-C port for power.

Anyone already order theirs?

The short answer is no. It requires a new firmware to even boot and that is only included in Raspbian Buster. Adafruit mentions issues about it here: https://youtu.be/VpG9r7CMTYs?t=433

So once Andy makes an pi-star image based off of Buster (similar to when the 3B+ was released), then it will work, so that could take a while.

It seems like a waste to use only for pi-star if you ask me. All of the new features that it ships with you won't even be using. I use 3B+'s, and they basically just idle and never go above 600 mhz, so even they are total overkill.

Take a look at the Announcements section of the forum; there's a post by Andy Taylor about exactly this.

So, I had looked for a forum post with a title of Pi4 or something similar. Seeing nothing obvious I posted my question. As is the case for me usually, I then went to the Announcements section and saw Andy's post. Duh. Sorry to bother you and thanks for the info.

I should have cross-posted the discussion here really - I'll see if I can do that.
