RPi 4B doesn't reboot

Post by KE0FHS »

FYI, just a little thing:

The Pi-Star Power > Reboot command works fine for my RPi Zero W and 3A+ based hotspots, but doesn't work for my 4B based hotspots.

For the RPi 4B hotspots: In the Pi-Star UI, it remains on the reboot message for awhile (probably 90 secs):
Reboot command has been sent to your Pi, please wait up to 90 secs for it to reboot.
You will be re-directed back to the dashboard automatically in 90 seconds.
Then it times out and cycles to a Server Not Found browser message:
The connection has timed out
The server at pi-star.local is taking too long to respond.

In the hotspot itself, the Nextion display reads: MMDVM STOPPED. And there it remains (have walked away and returned much later to no change) until I power off and back on manually.

I just thought of something: I'm using a Pimoroni Fan SHIM on both of my 4B hotspots (https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/fan-shim).

I wonder if that's interfering with the reboot?

If it is, it's worth the loss of the reboot functionality.

EDIT: Scratch that. Removed the Fan SHIM and same issue persists.

1) Right, removing the Fan SHIM didn't make a difference.

2) sudo rpi-eeprom-update
BCM2711 detected
Dedicated VL805 EEPROM detected
Checking for updates in /lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader/default
Use raspi-config to select either the default-production release or latest update.
BOOTLOADER: up-to-date
CURRENT: Thu 03 Sep 2020 12:11:43 PM UTC (1599135103)
LATEST: Thu 03 Sep 2020 12:11:43 PM UTC (1599135103)
RELEASE: default
VL805: up-to-date
CURRENT: 000138a1
LATEST: 000138a1

3) sudo shutdown -r now
If I understand correctly, I do lose the terminal connection (my SSH command terminal stops functioning).
Pi-Star doesn't boot up again.

4) I'm not getting an ACT LED error code.

5) Don't understand this one: plug in a microHDMI cable and see what the eeprom reports

Okay, thanks, I'll tackle that HDMI test another day. May not be until next week as we have a massive snowstorm headed our way tonight through Sunday night. Power lines down is possible, tons of snow shoveling is certain!

After swapping in a new RPi 4B and then a microSD card from a hotspot that did reboot with no luck, I finally swapped in a different radio/modem board. That turned out to be the issue. It's possible I messed it up when I soldered on the connector pins for the Nextion. Anyway, nice to have a fully working hotspot again. Thanks again for your help.

That's interesting. I have seen from time to time EEPROM-related errors when running pistar-update via SSH. Usually when that happens, I shut down and restart the hotspot so that it is properly in ro mode, and then try updating again. That has always seemed to do the trick. But maybe I missed that on one of my updates? Regardless, it's nice to have fully functioning hotspots again, with no reboot problems. Thanks again for looking into this issue.
