How to start the NextionDriver?

Post by OZ1HMN » Sun Nov 01, 2020 3:28 pm

Hi
After some hours of installing and manually modifying, I'm down to one issue (I hope), that the NextionDriver is not running.
How do I start this (autostart at boot)?

RPi3B+ pi-star 4.1.2 Nextion 2.4 USB connected.
Jumbo 1.4.16

I Serial port for Nextion is /dev/ttyNextionDriver
+ MMDVMHost is configured for NextionDriver

--------------------------
Searching NextionDriver ...
---------------------------
+ NextionDriver found at /usr/local/bin/NextionDriver
I Nextion is connected to /dev/ttyUSB0
+ Nextion seems to be connected to an active port
+ MMDVMHost is configured for NextionDriver

----------------------------
Checking active programs ...
----------------------------
+ MMDVMHost running with PID 1225
- NextionDriver not running

--------------------------------

+ MMDVMHost is configured for NextionDriver
+ The Nextion display must be connected to /dev/ttyUSB0
+ MMDVMHost is running

Trying to get this working:

But no success

After some hours of installing and manually modifying
The manually modifying part scares me.

If you reimage with a fresh pi-star and then configure your hotspot and Nextion to work properly, then when you run the Nextion Driver Installer there should be no manual modifications needed.

You've probably made a mistake when you were editing whatever you were editing.

Looking at the information you posted it looks like for some reason the NextionDriver.service is failing, look at its exit status. Maybe that will tell you what is wrong.

I would just start over, reimage and setup the hotspot to work with the basic Nextion fields, once you get that working then install the Nextion Driver and you shouldn't have to modify a single thing.

Thanks for responding.
It is a completely new setup. After doing the initial setup and checking that YSF was working, I did run the procedure as described with git clone and install.sh, and after that i also did that check of the installation. After the first check, then MMDVMHost was not configured for NextionDriver, so I have to enter this manually in the INI file. Second issue was the NextionDriver was not running so I have tried to start it manually, and also enter all that stuff manually from the linked page.
So I guess the Nextion driver install procedure failed somehow in my installation. Did not see any errors though during installation.

The display have been updated and layout downloaded without any issue using the same USB to TTL stick as I use om the RPi.
The ON7LDS start page is displayed after RPi boot up.
setup the hotspot to work with the basic Nextion fields
So should I be able to get the display working without the driver installed?

So started all over on another SD card, and without install the driver. The display works now :-)
One issue I also had before was that the USB option was not present before installation of the NextionDriver. Then it appeared.

And now after installing the NextionDriver and afterwards checking the installation, I have exactly same problem.
- MMDVMHost is NOT configured for NextionDriver
- NextionDriver is NOT running

Display however still works with my first setup as Nextion and USB0, so???

Yes. The Nextion Driver only adds a few new fields and capabilities to the display, it is not really a "driver" in the normal operating system terminology. It is really a poor choice of word for what it is, but I didn't name it.

As it should.

That is a problem with the dashboard, as it doesn't seem to detect ports correctly, you should be able to type in what port you want instead of relying on it being populated in a list.

The script is TELLING you where your problem is at, you need to fix it.

You have not properly set MMDVMHost to connect to the Nextion Driver, my guess is you still have it set on port=/dev/ttyUSB0, it should be Port=/dev/ttyNextionDriver

You are inserting the NnxtionDriver between the connection of MMDVMHost and the /dev/ttyUSB0 port.

On my tests the configuration is done for me by the Nextion Driver installer so I don't know what you are doing differently. Maybe you are removing /dev/ttyNextionDriver and selecting /dev/ttyUSB0 when you shouldn't be.

I need more info, I don't know what your first setup is, is that the old SD card??
