System Message on Model 8?

The Model 8 Dashboard version is working pretty well via the USB port on my JSpot/Pi0W hotspot but I’m curious about the space marked “System Message.” Nothing ever appears there. Is that a not-yet-implemented feature, or do I have to configure something? What’s supposed to happen in that space?
While I’m asking, the “Disk Free %” never shows anything but “??”. There’s lots of free space on the card, it’s a 16GB card that I’ve run sudo pistar-expand on, so there must be something over 75% free. Maybe the card’s not reporting its size correctly.
Everything is up to date, system-wise. I like having the reboot and shutdown buttons on-screen. Rob, you did a great job on both models 7 and 8!
