.96 OLED and C4 cases

Post by KC3MLA »

Planning to use .96 OLED screens on MMDVM boards from N5BOC in JRZ-1s and DRZ-1S cases from C4LABS.

How are the screens physically mounted? Double-sided tape onto MMDVM board?

I didn't think the design for the .96 OLED adaption case I received from C4Labs was adequate as the OLED just sort of floated freely in the open space. I ended up adding a bit of hot glue to hold it in place, which did the trick, so relatively easy fix, but I let the C4Labs folks know about the issue. I just looked at their instructions for their new 1.3" adaption kit, and it looks like they addressed the issue: it looks like the 1.3" OLED sits on top of the edges of one layer and is bookended in place by the next layer up.

When I asked C4 about this they said:

"the OLED screen is soldered directly to the board and because of the that the mounting holes are not needed for attachment."

which is impossible.

The .96 OLED I got has pins that fit the "port" on the MMDVM board. Did you add wires to it? What did you hot-glue it to, the MMDVM board?

Maybe you have a different OLED? I used the one from ZUM Radio that was available from HRO (now replaced by a 1.3" version). It included wiring and a shim PCB that slides onto the RPi's GPIO connector. The ZUMspot mounts to the GPIO on top of the shim.

The 1.3 add-on only works with the ZRZ-1 case, not the ZRZ-1S (which according to the description already has room for the .96 screen).

HRO says they never sold a .96 OLED screen.

That's funny, I purchased two of them from HRO in October: ZUM Radio Pi Add-On OLED Kit (0.96" OLED screen plus shim and cable)
