anyone know how to make HD 44780 work?

Hi,
I would like to try for HD44780 LCD work with MMDVM to display, I just want to see how it will look. as some HAM friend said I will need to install driver from the SSH terminal even the setup menu already have selection for LCD HD44780 and I got the wiring connection detail after connected that still did not appear on the LCD 2x16.
Anyone who knew about this method please help to suggest that.
