Unable to access ZUMspot-RPi Zero W

Post by N6CY »

Just got a ZUMspot-RPi kit from HRO yesterday. Initial wireless setup and configuration seemed to go okay but now with a computer and the ZUMspot-RPi on the same home network I'm unable to access the hotspot or configuration checks using either the http://pi-star or http://pi-star.local/ URLs.

Since my Micro SD card came pre-programmed with Pi-Star, I did all the configuration via wireless, and don't have anything "saved" to HDD. I configured the hot spot for
- both DStar and DMR access
- two home wireless LANs with PSK, and my mobile phone hotspot.
>>no download or "flashing" of the micro SD card.

The ZUMspot-RPi seems to be acting normally (amber power light at boot up, and alternating green LEDs while scanning for DMR and DStar signals). However I'm not sure if any of the transmissions from my mobile/handheld radios is actually making it on to the internet.

How do I regain control / access to the Pi-Star dashboard/config via wireless?

Thank you. Rick N6CY

Try using the IP address of the Pi in the browser address field. If you do not know the Pi IP address download an IP address finder such as "Fing" for your wireless phone (Android or IOS) and let it search for all the IP addresses on your home network. Hopefully it will find the IP address of your Pi-Star host name.

Did you get it to work? I am having the same issue. Using the utilities "Ping" and "Fing" I am unable to find or ping the Zumspot.

I also tried going to the Pi-star home page and using the link for the admin page. That doesn't load either. I have tried it on Firefox, Chrome, Explorer and Safari. My router does NOT have WiFi isolation mode.

If I connect directly to the Pi-Star wirelessley from my computer, I can go in and configure things, but I have no idea if they're working. As soon as I log out, connect to my wifi as usual and then try and load the local page, I get nothing.

Over the last three days I've probable spent close to 10 hours on this! Any and all help would be appreciated.

All,

yes I was able to re-connect to my ZUMspot. When I initially set up the RPi Zero W configuration I changed the hostname. This renders the default URL invalid for accessing the ZUMspot event when you are on the "same network." The old URLs were
http://pi-star
http://pi-star.local

The new ones that work for me are
http://<hostname>
http://<hostname>.local

These new addresses get you into the basic Pi-Star dashboard. When you subsequently go into the CONFIGURATION link you'll be asked for the login name and PW for that page. I left this alone when setting up the initial configuration. Therefore pi-star and raspberry work for me.

The next challenge is the connection to the internet...

Glad you were able to get yours working. Taking a very SLOW read through all of the instructions again I seem to have mine working as well. My problem is that I know my wifi name and password so I set it up in the configuration file without checking the wifi connections shown. My router uses both 2 ghz and 5 ghz. I of course put in the 5 ghz info because I want it to be faster. The pi-star only saw the 2ghz connection. Each connection has it's own name AND password. Once I put in the 2 ghz information I was then able to connect.

Once again and as usual, operator error!

Now, onto the internet connection and writing the code plug!

Good troubleshooting! With a RPi Zero W, you should be able to use the Auto AP feature to establish your WiFi connection.
