Switching wifi on the fly capability?

Post by K1RDD » Wed May 15, 2019 3:15 pm

Do hot spots allow for switching wifi on the fly? If/when I set one up, I will be bringing it back and forth to work, as well as using my phone's hot spot on the road. Will I have to go into the file setup each time and change the wifi connection from home to phone to work, etc?

"On the fly" -- technically, no...

On a reboot -- yes.

You should be able to configure specifications for multiple WiFi access points, and the unit should attempt each in sequence. If none are reachable it will go into AutoAP mode.

Thats not exactly correct.

The list of WiFi networks is programmed in order of preference, so I put my Cellphone hotspot at the top, then MiFi, then home network etc.
If a network above the current one becomes available - the Pi-Star will change to that network.

Make sense?

So, the file would be set up like this?

{
ssid="cellphone"
psk="cellphonePassword"

ssid="homewifi"
psk="homePassword"

ssid="workwifi"
psk="workPassword"

}

When you use the dashboard it will add some extra magic - but essentially yes.
(its the extra magic that makes the auto selection of the highest priority SSID work).
