Noob trying MMDVM Hotspot and no Pi-star.local connect

Post by kt4naz »

First build with pi-star and MMDVM from China/Ebay and can not get to Pi-star.local to set up. The
spot is seen on computer and cell phone as wifi, but will not connect to computer for set=up.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Computer? if Windows pi-star.local will not work -- try http://pi-star/ if nothing else find the IP of the Pi-Star and use it instead.

If you are using a Cell the only way mine works is the IP as the Cell hotspot doesn't do nameserver stuff like a home network would.

If you see pi-star-setup in the list of networks and connet to that on your computer, then you should use http://192.168.50.1/ as the place to go to set up the wifi of your home/work/cell, whatever. I don't think I've ever had pi-star work on initial setup, always 192.168.50.1

You may get a No Modem Defined when you do this, it is normal, just config for your radio board, apply changes, (you may have to do twice, sometimes mine did that. Then scroll to very bottom of configuration page (if you didn't already get the Username and password, they are pi-star and raspberry respectively.

Once you enter the first WIFI network (Save and connect), I find mine don't actually work until [Apply Changes also] and Reboot the Pi-Star so it connects to your 'real' network. Then pi-Star (or whatever the HOSTNAME is (pistar) I think at one time they took out the dash in the middle) should work fine.

Good Luck.

I agree that trying http://pi-star/ when running Windows is a good idea, but just FYI, I run a Win 10 laptop (always updated) and I have always used http://pi-star.local/ (I always include that trailing slash), and it has always worked. So the issue with Windows not being able to handle .local might apply only to older versions of Windows. (I use http://pi-star.local/ because I use the same browser shortcuts when viewing the Pi-Star dashboard from my Windows and Mac computers.)

W1KMC, Mr. Kevin "If you see pi-star-setup in the list of networks and connect to that on your computer, then you should use http://192.168.50.1/" that worked. Thanks so much, still having a problem connecting and staying connected?
Also had issues with my user name and password with my modem, I think the phone tech changed them when he installed the new modem.
My Wireless Configuration box has a frown face so I need to figure that out next?
KE0FHS, thanks for your input also.

Now to setup the cell phone.

Thanks much for the help,

Terry
