Pi-star wtih SODIAL MMDVM_HS_Dual_Hat Duplex MMDVM Hotspot

Post by KC4TAM »

Hello, I have recently put together a Raspberry Pi 3b+ with the SODIAL MMDVM_HS_Dual_Hat Duplex MMDVM Hotspot. I have flashed the SD card with the latest software from Pi-star and for some reason when I connect the Pi-star to my router via Ethernet cable I am unable to see it from my Windows computer on the same network when I go to Pi-star/local. I am trying to do the initial set-up and seem to be at a loss as to move forward.

Any help will be appreciated!

Best Regards,
Todd

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the problem.

I think I may be having problems with the image. I have burned the image using Etcher. I am using a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and I think this is the correct image "Pi-Star_RPi_V3.4.17_20-Jan-2019.zip."?
For some reason the Ethernet port is not active (no light on the Pi or the router) I know the port is good because it works with a Raspberry Pi image file.

Perhaps am I using the wrong image file?

Any thoughts will be appreciated..

Thanks in advance!

With the RPi 3B+, you need to use the Pi-Star V4.1 beta image:
Pi-Star_RPi_V4.1.0-RC2_08-Jul-2019.zip
Available here:

There are a few variables to set. Under Configuration > MMDVM Configuration:
MMDVM Display Type: OLED
Port: /dev/ttyAMA0

Note that there are some fundamental and optional OLED settings available via the Expert Editor on the MMDVMHost page in the OLED section:
  • Set OLED Type: 3 = 0.96″ or 6 = 1.3″. After applying changes, reboot Pi-Star.
  • Change rotation: Rotate = 0 or 1.
  • Invert background: 0 = white text on black background or 1 = black text on white.
  • Scroll (mode label when active): 1 = Yes or 0 = No.
  • Change brightness: 10 = bright or 0 = less bright (effect varies by modem board).
  • Thanks to Scott, VK7HSE, for this one: If your OLED display has garbled text, check your Display Level in the Expert Editor > MMDVMHost > Log section. It must be set to 0.
P.S. This is all documented in the notes linked in my footer.
