ZUMspot - Duplex Raspberry Pi Hat (GPIO)

Post by w6wez »

I just received the Duplex ZUMspot and the quickstart guide shows a modem selection of " ZUMspot - Duplex
Raspberry Pi Hat (GPIO)" but it doesn't show up in the Pi-Star modem drop down menu. I found one that seems to work but not sure if I am missing something. Sorry, that I am such a noob.

Is this anything to worry about? Is there something that I need to do to add the selection to the list? Without it Brandmeister doesn't list my hardware correctly on their site.

Well, this is a bit awkward. Support for that option has been added to the latest version of the MMDVM_HS firmware, v1.5b, though as the "b" suggests, that version is still a pre-release beta. You can find it here:
https://github.com/juribeparada/MMDVM_HS/releases

The problem is, there isn't yet a script included in Pi-Star for updating the firmware of that radio/modem board, and even if there were, the regular firmware scripts won't upgrade to a pre-release beta. So I think the the only way you can accomplish that is by using a manual method, which can be found at the bottom of this page (I haven't tried this myself, so proceed at your own risk):
https://github.com/juribeparada/MMDVM_HS

On the HRO webpage for that product, they do offer the following: "If you would like the Original Preconfigured SD Card Image that was included with your ZUMspot Duplex Kit With 1.3 OLED" with a link to download that zip file.

Maybe that's a special version of the Pi-Star image with the pre-release beta version of the firmware included?

ZUM Radio should really provide clearer support for this. You might try calling HRO to see what they say, or, if you use Facebook, you could ask in the Official ZUMspot and ZUM Radio Products Group to see what they suggest.

I hope they are not distributing modified versions - how are we supposed to support that?!

[Okay, completely editing this post, because my original version was incorrect. Apologies for that, but this really confused me.]

There are two boards listed on HRO, a Dual Band board and a Duplex board. Unfortunately, in the description for both of them, it says: "If you would like the Original Preconfigured SD Card Image that was included with your ZUMspot Duplex Kit With 1.3 OLED - Click Here To Download."
Duplex kit: https://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-017019
Dual Band kit: https://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-017020

In the Quick Start Guide for the Dual Band board, there is a screen capture showing "ZUMspot - Dual Band Raspberry Pi (GPIO)" selected as the Radio/Modem board.

In the Quick Start Guide for the Duplex board, there is a screen capture showing "ZUMspot - Duplex Raspberry Pi (GPIO)" selected as the Radio/Modem board.

Until today's Pi-Star dashboard update to 20200219, neither of those options were available in Pi-Star. Now Andy has added the Duplex option, but the Dual Band option still isn't available.

I have spoken to Jim and added in the options so that they show up for all of us.
