Hotspot 1: MMDVM HS Dual Hat (duplex) modem running firmware v1.4.17
Hotspot 2: Zumspot modem (simplex) modem running firmware v1.4.14
For either of the above hotspots:
Set the hotspot to scan for D-STAR and YSF.
From a Yaesu radio, transmit -- short or long -- in VW mode.
Modem does not recognize the transmission; i.e., it does not stop scanning.
Transmit in DN mode.
Modem recognizes the transmission and acknowledges YSF mode.
Switch the radio back to VW mode and transmit.
Modem recognizes the transmission.
Repeater 1: MMDVM repeater board (duplex) running firmware 20190130
Repeater set to scan for D-STAR and YSF.
With the repeater setup (above), the modem always recognizes VW mode.
Is there a problem with firmware version 1.4.x?
Is there a known work-around or fix?

YSF VW Mode Not Detected When Modem Scanning
Re: YSF VW Mode Not Detected When Modem Scanning
DN mode is C4FM using the AMBE codec with quite a bit of FEC inserted.
VW mode is also C4FM, but it uses the older IMBE codec with more voice bits and bandwidth but with less error correction. They are not compatible, although VW mode is broadly similar to P25 Phase 1.

I realize that. I was trying to point out that current firmware (1.4.17) had lost some functionality compared to 19-month-old firmware (20190130).
> I don't understand...what VW and DN mode are...
VW is Yaesu's C4FM mode where all the bandwidth is devoted to voice.
DN is Yaesu's C4FM mode where 1/2 the bandwidth is used for voice and the other 1/2 is used for telemetry.
> I don't understand what you are doing...
I am trying to use the hotspot for D-STAR and YSF. When I use YSF, I wish to use VW mode but the modem doesn't behave the way I would expect.

I know that but the signal strength is quite high and VW mode should work. (And it does if the modem is not scanning.)
Should this be posted to a different thread where the focus is on modem issues?
