Band 435-438mhz

Post by iz5wga »

Hello, I know this band is for satellites, but is there a way to use it on pi star with dual hat?
Here in Italy it's common even for repeaters to listen on 435 band and transmit on 430. I cannot use a 1600 shift from 430 to 431.600 because it's too narrow and the pistar raises the BER uncomfortably.
The only way to decrease it is to use a 5000 shift, but since you forbid the 435-438 band, it is not usable here in Italy where the band plan forbids even 434-435 band.
Can I bypass that enforcement? I say again, here in Italy repeaters commonly use 435 band for repeaters receive frequency.

Thanks

What other restrictions are there for 430-440MHz in Italy? Here in the UK we have both 7.6 and 9MHz shift repeaters.

Our Band plan gives to ham radio operators the band 430.000 to 434.000 not included and from 435.000 to 438.000, so we have 430-434 / 435-438, and shift can be +1.600 or +5000.

That's why I *really* need to put a shift +5.000, like repeaters do...

Yes, I see your problem.

What does the Italian national society suggest? If anything.

Given that there are repeaters in this band maybe the solution is to use a frequency in the repeater band that is quiet in your area, or offset between channels. We have both 12.5 and 25kHz spacing channels here but at one time our Ministry of Defence had a UHF data comms system that was offset 12.5kHz from the 25kHz repeater channels so we had to avoid those frequencies. I don't know enough about the situation in Italy, but we are secondary users of 70cms here.

The society suggests to use the shift +5 MHZ... that's why I'm requesting the ability to use the RX in band 435 MHZ, that atm the PIstar doesn't let me to use ...

Yes you can override the restriction, however you will need to compile the firmware yourself. Now before you say "but I can't do that!" the process is not that difficult and there is a step by step instruction that you can copy and paste all the commands. This is located on the following url https://github.com/juribeparada/MMDVM_HS

Once you have a local copy of the mmdvm_hs on your hotspot and have copied the relevant config template as Config.h edit the file and look for the following (it's at the end of the file) then remove the double slash in front of the #define..... For both entries and save the file and then follow the instructions on the compile process and once you have flashed the firmware you will be able to enter in the frequency that you are currently unable to.

Code: Select all

// Disable frequency bands check
// #define DISABLE_FREQ_CHECK

// Disable frequency restrictions (satellite, ISS, etc)
// #define DISABLE_FREQ_BAN
Please note that for all future firmware updates you will need to compile it yourself as the provided firmwares enforce the frequency restriction.

Cheers

Thanks VK7HSE!

I needed to solder theJP1 jumper and the trick worked!
Thanks a lot!

Let's say, anyhow, that I feel comfortable enough in this stuff since I use linux since 1998 as main operative system =)
Just I didn't know about this at all!

Cheers and '73!
