AMERICALINK via D-STAR in my PI? (Newbie Question)

Post by W6CJ »

I like AMERICALINK and other YSF reflectors/rooms, but I'm struggling with the tinny speaker audio in an FT3DR and cannot tolerate it for long periods. I had this newbie thought:

Is there a way to use D-STAR (between my D-STAR handheld and my PI) and then translate over to a YSF reflector such as AMERICALINK? If my PI cannot do that, is there a D-STAR <------> YSF AMERICALINK reflector that will?

I' m running one of those new Zumspot RPi Nextion 3.5's from Ham Radio Outlet.

This is a FAQ.

There is no protocol translation in Pi-Star to or from D-Star. This would require additional hardware that is not part of the supported MMDVM devices.

Or to be more detailed...

It would require an AMBE codec on one side, and an AMBE-2 codec for the other. The digital audio coming from the radio would have to be decoded, passed over to the other, and re-encoded. AMBE codecs are not open-source; manufacturers have to pay license fees to use the codecs

DMR<>YSF is possible because both use the same AMBE codec; they only need to strip off the addressing headers in each packet, and wrap the packet in with the headers used by the other protocol.

Jay,

Here's another idea for you...

Buy a small external speaker such as the DX Engineering DXE-218 for about $15.
You will also need the Yaesu CT-44 adapter for your HT for about $20.

Together they should help a lot.
