Update from 3.4.17 to 4.1.5.

Post by dd5ma »

My Pi Zero W Rev 1.1 (512MB) works fine with 3.4.17.
Now I tried to update to 4.1.5. but after I followed all procedures my MMDVM_HS does not boot!
I wrote the Pi-Star_RPi_V4.1.5_21-Jun-2021 to a 16GB SD-Card.
Is there perhaps a missunderstanding that I cannot use the Pi-Star_RPi_V4.1.5_21-Jun-2021 with my Pi Zero W Rev 1.1 (512MB)?
Or any other mistake?

Pi-Star 4.1.X should work with any R-Pi version.

But it will likely come up in "unconfigured" mode, which means it will be opening a WiFi access point for you to connect /to/ the R-Pi, and set up the configuration -- after which a reboot should connect to the router you set up.

On my Model B+ Rev 1.0 with an 8GB card, it took 8-10 minutes for it to fully come up....so I agree with Jason you probably havent waited long enough.

The card gets expanded on first boot so its going to take longer than usual....

Hello,

May you have to reconfigure pi-star die to Changes in the configuration format of newer pi-Star Version.
If your is working afterwards you should Check, in your Firmware on the mmdvm hat is up to date.

Best regards

Hello Frank,

Pistar will boot an old firmware. If there would be a Problem with the Firmware, pistar will boot, but you will geht no digital modes working. I had a wrong Firmware on a mmdvm modem with the wrong Firmware for a Dual modem, the pistar did boot.

If you are not familiar with firmware update in pistar, please visit e.g. Toshens amateurradionote Website with Good Information concerning pistar Problems and firmware Updates of mmdvm Modem. And Look on the webpage of your seller of your Equipment concerning confirming Firmware Update Procederes an be careful to use the correct Firmware. :D

Even you Received good hints in this Thread an this Forum is Full of Lots of Information.

I have no jumbospot or zumspot equipment. I work with raspberry 2, 3 and 4 with mmdvm hats.

Summary: a New firmware Version is not important for your booting problem. When your pistar works, ist makes sence to Update the firmware to have an better digital behaviour of your rig.

Best Regards
Kai

I have the exact same issue.
I have V3.4.17 running fine on my Pi Zero W V1.1. But.....

I downloaded Pi-Star_RPi_V4.1.5_21-Jun-2021 and used the Raspberry Pi Imager to burn the .img file to the SD card. I also added the wpa_supplicant.conf to the root of the SD card. With this, the Pi zero will not start. So I then connected up a mini HDMI cable and screen to the Pi Zero to see what it was doing. The Pi Zero does actually boot, then it unpacks the files, mounts the filesystems, tries to start up the wlan0, then it panics and reboots ,and the process starts again.

I downloaded the image file from https://www.pistar.uk/downloads/

I only tried to update the firmware because there is a banner at the top of the pi-start home page saying: -

"Alert: You are running an outdated version of Pi-Star, please upgrade.
New versions are available from the here: http://www.pistar.uk/downloads/."

What I will do is put the SD card with a fresh image burn onto a Pi 3B I have lying around to see if it works on a non Pi zero platform.

Dear OM,

did you generate a new wpa_supplicant.conf from pistar.uk of use an old one of your previous pistar system?

I would generate an new file and try that.
