Pi-Star Cannot Read Modem's Firmware Version

Post by KG4OPX »

I am running 4.19.75-v7+ on a Pi 3 Model B+ (1GB) - Sony, UK.

I am using STM32-DVM / MMDVM_HS - Raspberry Pi Hat (GPIO) form the modem as suggested. The problem is that the when Pi-Starts it cannot read the modem firmware.

Suggest you try again with:

MMDVM_HS_HAT (DB9MAT&DF2ET) for Pi (GPIO)

selected for the Radio/Modem type.

Hi Brian,

Tried it and have the same results. There must be some type of hardware conflict. I tried to upgrade the firmware but the modem cannot be initialized. I have no idea why Arduino shows up.

Can you post some pics of the radio/modem, might help to identify what it is.

Are pins 38 and 40 connected between the MMDVM and the PI? Failed to Init usually means they're not.

Try building out your system with a fresh image.

(Had a similar situation where connection to the firmware/hat seemed to have been lost and feared the firmware might have been fried. On a lark, and as a last restore, started from scratch with a new image and viola! Apparently, some file or other got corrupted or deleted during one of the various updates and a refresh is the only way out.)

The latest schematic is shown at the link below:

https://github.com/mathisschmieder/MMDV ... hs-hat.pdf

You can see that pins 38 and 40 of the GPIO connector are connected to the STM32 CPU. Worth checking that they are actually connected.

One other thing I can suggest is that if the ADF7021 clock is not present, often due to the TCXO soldering being poor, then the radio doesn't respond. I would check that there is a waveform on the ADF7021 clock input, but that is under the OLED display so not that easy to reach.

I returned the modem to Amazon for a full refund. I guess I will buy a complete setup.
