MMDVM board failure

Post by KN6MNZ »

I just received my hot-spot from China and after a few minutes it stopped displaying the modem information an now I only see the "Starting up your Hotspot, please wait a moment" screen. UI have re flashed the CF card and basically went through every Forum that I can find with no answers. At this time I believe the card may have died. On the card the power LED is solid and the SVC LED flashes every 2 seconds. In Putty i can do a pistar-mmdvmhshatreset and it does say it is restarting the modem so at this point I am hitting a brick wall. The card is a Duplex hotSPOT for RPI (VR2VYE & BI7JTA)

It seems to be a very common question asked, I've walked people though fixing it many times.

I doubt it. You probably just have the wrong modem selected and it assigned the wrong com port or it is actually working fine despite what you see on the Nextion and the Nextion is defaulted to the wrong baud rate on powerup.

What modem do you have selected in the configuration?

Did you try to install the Nextion Driver?

If the LED flashes slowly when powering up, and then faster then communications between the RPi and the MMDVM_HS hat are good. If not what com port do you have configured?

And how are you connecting to the RPi, GPIO or USB?

When you do that do the LED's all flash 3 times? Do the LED's flash 3 times on power up too?

If so there is nothing wrong with the MMDVM_HS hat, only the serial communications from the RPi to hat are missing.

Also theres two different serial communications going on, one is between the RPi and the MMDVM_HS hat, and the other is between either a USB/TTL adapter and a Nextion, or the MMDVM_HS Nextion port and the Nextion.

Which way do you have the Nextion connected?

Hi the modem I have selected is MMDVM_HS_Hat_Dual HAT (VR2VYE) for Pi (GPIO). I did Install the Nextion driver. I am connecting to the display via GPIO (pins connected directly to MMDVM board). Yes, all the LEDs flash when I restart the modem services. They also all flash when the board powers up. They do flash 3 times. Thank you so much for your help!

cant really see the details, but it looks to me like you may be wired incorrectly....on the hat side, mine is blk:yel:blu:red looks like maybe you have yellow and blue backwards....but I do have a different board.....

also many have had issues installing the NextionDriver......if you do it twice, it fixes the slight glitch from the first install. basically the first time didnt create the symlinks properly.

Was the display working (displaying information on the screen) BEFORE you tried to install the driver?

Do you have the port set correctly for a Nextion connected to the hat? It should be set to modem, not /dev/modem or anything else, just modem.

Code: Select all

[NextionDriver]
Port=modem
Also do you have a [Transparent Data] section in your /etc/mmdvmhost configuration file?

Check to make sure that TX on the Nextion goes to RX on the Hat, and Rx on the Nextion goes to TX on the hat.

That means theres nothing wrong with the MMDVMH_HS hat.

The fact that they flash when you issue the restart command also means that you have communications from the RPi to the Hat.

The issue could be either the Nextion has got TX to TX, and RX to RX, or it is defaulted to the incorrect baud rate.

The installer doesn't create any symlinks.

Hi The display was working before I did anything. It stopped working after I was configuring my personal information on the hotspot. The display is wired *901correctly RX to TX. I did reinstall the Nextion drivers 2 times in a row. Port is set to modem. Where can you check the baud rate? I did not see where I can find a Transparent Data section. Once again thank you for your help.

You can't, you just tell the Nextion to set a default speed on power up. For modem connected displays it must be 9600 if using the stock MMDVM_HS firmware.

That tells me you didn't have the port set to modem when you ran the Nextion Driver installer.

I suggest reimaging and starting fresh (and not restoring from a backup). Make sure the Nextion port is set to modem BEFORE you attempt to run the Nextion Driver Installer, you should see a message displayed that it is adding the transparent section.
