RSSI.dat how to?

Greetings,
I have finally enabled RSSI on my repeater (added the pin on the mmdvm board and motorola radios) and im learning there is a lot that needs to go into calculating these values. I do not have a service monitor or tracking generator, but everything Im reading online shows they were able to get the correct rssi values using those.
Are there ways of getting proper RSSI to dBm values for the rssi.dat without having this expensive equipment? I can use MMDVMCal with the RSSI mode and see the values change when I add attenuation.
