D-Star Connection Issue with multiple hotspots - RESOLVED

Post by k0eg »

= = = RESOLVED - see last post for solution. = = =

I'm brand new to D-Star and working on setting a couple of Pi-Star hotspots so I can learn more.

I have hours of searching under my belt and I've not been able to find a direction for next steps to figure out what is going on here.

I've got a Pi-Star configured for D-Star at home that has been working just fine. I wanted to configure a Pi-Star for my truck so that I don't have to unplug/plug the home hotspot every time I go for a drive.

Both hotspots work in the configuration with DMR, but I can't get the mobile hotspot to connect to the network. I'm sure there is something very elementary that I'm missing as to why the mobile hotpot refuses to connect to the D-Star network.

I'm able to link/unlink reflectors with the home Pi-Star without any issues.

The mobile hotspot log shows that it received my request to link, but it goes no further. So I assume that the mobile Pi-Star is not connecting out to the D-Star network.

Both Pi-Star hotspots have been upgraded to the latest build. While the hardware is different, I have a duplicate of the home hotspot hardware that is having the same issue - can't connect to D-Star.

Looks like both have the same callsign and module.

You will not be able to simultaneously link 2 hotspots with the same setup, you need to register an additional module and change one of the hotspots to use it.

Some of the reflectors will ban your IP address too, so I would recommend making this change quickly.

@G8SEZ - thank you for your reply.

Sorry I didn't see this documented.

So once I create a new module, I think I know where to go, what changes would I make in Pi-Star and where would those me?

Would this be with the letter for RPT1 in the Configuration|D-Star Configuration area?

Do both of my radios also need a module assigned?

Thank you and 73s

You will likely have to define a new "repeater" so you have separate definitions for each hotspot. On my D74 I have one hotspot defined in the repeater table, as such:

Code: Select all

4	North America	51	USA	108	W8	AF6VN B	AF6VN G	Off	Hotspot	DV-Mega	446.250	+	0.000	Digital	Off	Off	Exact	42	56.16	N	85	21.40	W	-5:00	On	Off	Off
Note that the hotspot module (B) is part of that definition. The Gateway probably stays the same on both hotspots.

You'd have two such rows (and they maybe should also be on different frequencies, since if you are in range of both hotspots they may conflict).

Yes, and as AF6VN suggests you want to have them on different frequencies because otherwise they can create a loop which is not a good outcome.

@AF6VN thank you for the reply

I change the D-Star configuration on the gateway system back around as follows:

Yes, and as AF6VN suggests you want to have them on different frequencies because otherwise they can create a loop which is not a good outcome.
As far as the radio configuration, I've been using 2 different configurations all along as they are on different frequencies. This has been in place for my DMR configuration that I've been using for 8 months.

So with those changes in place, there is not change in function. The home hotspot is still running where I"m able to link and unlink reflectors. The mobile hotspot hears my request, but does nothing with it.

Mobile logging - trying to link - fails with no response

I'm curious as to what I can to do troubleshoot / enable more detailed logging on the mobile hotspot.

Thank you and 73s

Connect your mobile installation to the home network to check if your getting blocked by your mobile broadband service provider.

id also suggest you change DMR IDs by adding an ssid to each eg. 315070801 1315070802 (01) (02) this way the DMR server will see each installation as a seperate connection.

At this point I'd have to concur... Cable both up to your home router (just to avoid WiFi interference at first). Then try using each system from the radio (recommend not linking both to the same reflector). If you can link through both modules/frequencies when cabled to the home router, THEN

Remove cables and configure for router WiFi and repeat the test. If that works... temporarily disable the home Wifi and enable the phone hotspot. Let both R-Pis connect to the phone (you may have to add the config to the "home" Pi-Star). Repeat linking test -- if neither get through, the odds are good that your phone is not opening up the needed ports, or your phone carrier is blocking "unknown" traffic (that is, they may only allow you initiate connections to common ports: Telnet/SSH, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, HTTP/HTTPS, maybe NNTP and PING).
