WiFi Hotspot not recognized

Post by N7HHI »

I just received a FreedomPop - ATT Unite - Netgear hotspot today.
I have added it to my Pi-Star WiFi configuration, but it is not recognized. I can connect to it from my phone, tablet, & notebook, but I can't connect to it from Pi-Star.
The Pi-Star WiFi configuration "Scan for Networks" can see it.
I have changed the SSID to a short 5 character all lowercase string. The passkey is the same as my home wifi that does work.
I even deleted the home wifi and re-added it so that the wifi hotspot was first in the list. It will not connect to the wifi hotspot but does still connect to my home wifi.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
Suggestions?

So as part of my debugging exercise, I took my Raspberry Pi Zero and configured it with the SSID and Passcode for the WiFi hotspot and it connects without issue.
So it looks like it's only my Raspberry Pi 2b with a Raspberry Pi Wi-Fi dongle and a DVAP that is not connecting to the WiFi hotspot.
Again, the Pi 2b connects just fine to the home WiFi router, just not the WiFi hotspot.
For the life of me, I can't figure out what I may be doing wrong.

Raspberry Pi Soliloquy

2 B, or not 2 B, that is the question:

And fling the blasted chips into the inferno.

If you are trying to test it connecting to the Freedompop Unite whilst sitting at your desk, it won't work (hint: priorities man, priorities :-) )

on the unit that does not work, try:

Configuration - Expert - wifi (bottom full config files)

each network looks like:
Network {
SSID = "nameyourpoison"
PSK = "ichoosecyanideandsodiumpenathol"
idstr = "0" <-- this is incremented as the networks get added (I thought we could use home / work / mobile instead but does not show on dashboard this way so just number them)
priority = 100 (decrements by 1 as new networks are added)

}

So what yo want is to renumber the priorites so that freedompop is tried and if on, used before your home wifi.

Save the file clicking save at the bottom. Reboot.

The other way if you don't want t o futz with the file order is take the hotspot, and Freedompop away from the house.

Good luck.

Thanks Kevin for the information. I did not know about the options for WiFi in the Expert menu. That helps me a lot to understand how it all works.
I am embarrassed to say that when I went into that menu item, I noticed a typo in the PassPhrase. Once I corrected that - viola - everything works.
