Using cellular modem for internet

Post by VE6CPU »

Hello everyone. I have a cellular modem hat for my RPi and has the full 40 pin connector so I can stack my STM32-DVM on top of it. I'm 99% sure I can get it setup and working as my internet connection, I'm just curious if anyone knows how much data it might use in a day? I have pretty unlimited data but it does get slowed down if I use more then 32 gigs in a month.

If your cellular modem hat uses the serial port (pins 8 and 10) to communicate, which I'm pretty sure it does you cannot run a GPIO MMDVM_HS hat as two devices on one serial port cannot function properly. One device wouldn't know which messages are for which device, and messages would collide and corrupt messages meant for the other device.

You would need a USB MMDVM_HS hat.

32 gigs in a month should be plenty, unless someone hacks into your RPi and tries to use it for some nefarious purpose. The normal hotspot traffic is pretty small. One of my systems here is reporting 500 megs over the last 5 days and its on 24/7 connected to BM 3100.
If someones previous actions are any indication of their future actions, then I predict the deletion and removal of access will happen at any moment. 7-11-2020.
