Post by W1KGK »

Has anyone tried booting to the their Network using a USB device plugged in the mini USB port on a Raspberry PI zero W?
Understand that this will work on Raspbian but was wonder if will work on Pi-Star??

Thanks

WDYM by USB network boot?

Booting over a network.?

Pi-star IS Raspbian. It just has some applications, scripts and tweaks added to the base lite image (and some applications removed). But it is just Raspbian.
Ok, Raspian. So, the question still is:

Can we have USB-ETH converter attached to use LAN ?

If so,
Any aditional packet needs to be installed?

Thanks for helping !

On my first PI0w I used a USB-ETH converter and an OTG adapter to get it set up. This was long before I learned about the Wi-Fi builder and WAY before the built in hotspot.

If you use a USB-ETH on your Pi 0 it will use that before using Wi-Fi, and if you unplug it, it will switch to Wi-Fi.

Your best option would be buy a brand and model that people have reported a successful test.
There are compatibility listings all over the web. https://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Ethernet_adapters
Ok, I'll have a look to make sure I get the right converter.
Thanks for helping !!!!

The old SIIG "USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet Adapter" (v1.0 02-1327A) is recognized on an R-Pi 3B+ running Buster as

pi@rpi3bplus-1:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0b95:7720 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88772

Don't know how the newer SIIG branded units are (I think I own a USB-3/Gigabit model, but haven't used it -- most of these were needed in my prior job where a lot of network testing was done: output on one NIC, to some external hardware, input back on a second NIC, logging time-stamps to determine latency, packet loss, etc.)
