Its now fixed - in the sense that the latest dashboard fix cures the insanity, I'll push out a new image this weekend too.

Andy, how much is a new MMDVMHost version needed for Pi-Star? I was looking at something earlier in the live logs and noticed that it's dated 20200615 and that the G4KLX version is some 400+ commits ahead of your repo. I realise that there are a lot of changes to consider in that diff.

What repo? I've never seen a repo where his custom MMDVMHost changes are published.
This is the repo:

https://github.com/AndyTaylorTweet/MMDVMHost

it's not really possible to see what has been changed relative to the G4KLX version but the github comparison tools do allow you to see how many differences there are. Since June 2020, quite a few.

Then there is this repo:

https://github.com/MW0MWZ/MMDVM_Stack

which I think Andy intends to provide updated MMDVM components which are automatically kept up to date with Jonathan's changes, but as yet that has not materialised.

I'm pretty confident that repo is just the clone of G4KLX's repo that Andy uses to make changes meant for G4KLX's by requesting pulls and it is not the exact source code used to make the MMDVMHost binaries that are provided in the nightly update.
Yes, that's how it seems to me, I can't find a version string in the G4KLX repo that is 20200615 so clearly that is created by Andy's own unpublished git tree.

I have a suspicion that he uses at least a custom makefile, and I'm not sure what other changes he makes to any of the original source code. I would love for that information to be published somewhere.
Well I suppose that one day this may become available, it really depends on how much of Andy's time and effort Pi-Star takes up and whether he feels the need to spread the load among those interested and competent enough to improve things. I could certainly build my own version but whether it would be any better than the vanilla version and not break some things that are best left untouched I couldn't say.

Honestly, I doubt that will ever happen. I've asked for him to share his MMDVMHost build environment over a year ago when I was trying to diagnose a serial port error I was encountering, my request was completely ignored and just brushed off. I was never able to add simple print statements to figure out which function was the source of the error and why it was happening. So I ended up just giving up.

Let's address a few things here, my repo https://github.com/AndyTaylorTweet/MMDVMHost was used to submitting a patch at some point, I'll go delete that it doesn't need to exist any more.

I don't maintain a separate branch of MMDVMHost for Pi-Star, we use the upstream code, you can run MMDVMHost -v to see the git tag for the commit where I pull/build the binary.

So *WHY* are we not bang up to date, simply because I need to know that it works fully reliably, and that the dashboard is setting all the correct options and that the MMDVMHost bin works with the rest of the stack, Pi-Star has become a complicated beast, so that takes time.

I do now have an automated solution to build the bins when there is a change, although, as above, pulling those in that fast is full of potential issues.

Case in point, the new MMDVMHost needs a new config line if you use it to connect directly to DMR, so if I just pull that in, a good few people will drop off DMR with no explanation. So I do try to tread carefully with all of that.

Quite understand Andy, and you do a good job of keeping it all working given that the world it interacts with won't stay still long enough to get in the saddle some days.

If there were a more beta stream at some point I would be happy to help test if that would make your efforts easier.

Do you have some good pointers of places where development discussions go on for the various DV networks and protocols? It can be hard to follow, I hope you get more notice of changes than end users!
