All digital mode radio (almost) using analog radio and PiStar

Post by AD8DP »

I have been working on a project called DUDE-Star that, in addition to BlueDV type internet based functionality, connects to my own hardware and an analog radio via the 9600bps data port to create an (almost) all digital mode transceiver. By almost, I mean that I haven't created an NXDN utility yet, although that will be easy enough. The other 'almost' is that for DMR it is simplex only, and it may always be that way. I decided to create utilities for PiStar in addition to my own project and maybe in the future create a version of my board as a PiStar hat. For now, these utilities can be used with currently available hardware with some simple modifications for PTT. Details including a video demonstration can be found here:

As I mention at the site, I stress that this is not meant for the end user to consider as anything near a finished product.

@MW0MWZ I have been hoping to hear your thoughts on the P252DMR and DMR2P25 utilities viewtopic.php?f=24&t=2724 , and more so now since this project also makes use of the vocoders used by that project. I would like to know if you will be interested in including all of this stuff or is I should look into a PiStar fork sometime down the road.

Including them directly in Pi-Star is, at least potentially a legal mine-field, but I am working on a solution that would allow it to be easy once you accept some don't sue us type of agreement....

I have submitted an article to TAPR to be published in PSR to try and solicit some help improving the D-Star AMBE. Depending on how that goes the ARRL's QEX could be another avenue.

There is one patent left that affects the other modes. I have a run down of things here:

I disagree on the "legal mine field," based on the information Bruce Perens has shared in the past. But I am glad you are working on a solution vs dismissing it all.

Thanks Doug for all your hard work.

Doug,

I'll be trying your software out very soon. I have most of it installed. I just need to work on some of the interfacing. I have a STM32 (USB) from repeater builder laying here, and I am trying to determine if that will work for the GOIP part. I am thinking not, so I'll have to visit my friend who has one of my other interfaces.

I am going to mess with setting up a bluetooth link from the Raspberry Pi to my phone to the pi-star dashboard, or if nothing else turn the PI into an access point.

I got that idea from this somewhat different rig that has no display:
