Yes, this update will require a newer version of mmdvmhost otherwise the current version won't recognise your modem after the update. I've run into a similar issue with two Zumradio 0.9 board that were accidently updated this morning because I didn't pay attention to the ssh session I was logged into, and they are both broken. On the Zumspot it was easy to roll back the firmware but for some reason those repeater controller boards aren't playing nice for me... So, if there's a lesson to learn here is to make sure you are on the correct terminal before you it enter!
So don't compile and update just yet otherwise you'll be left with a broken pistar and you'll have to reflash with pistar-zumspotflash rpi to get things working again...

I was watching a G4KLX talk last night, he mentioned M17 several times and every time said "but there's no hardware".
If theres no hardware.... how is anyone doing any testing? And why do all these people want it so badly??

It's just not ready for wide deployment and may well need a faster processor on the MMDVM HAT to be viable.
I hope that isn't the case, if it needs faster hardware it would be best to fork it to its own branch so that it doesn't break all the STM F1's currently out there.
It may be alright in sensible configurations, but with 9 possible modes it would exceed the power available in the 180MHz M4 CPUs, the newer boards are using the 260MHz M7 ARMs, and I think those actually run 2 threads per core so are much more than 50% faster.
I haven't been following this too closely, more information can be found by searching for G4KLX on the usual tube sites.
It covers a fair few bases, but this vid. was posted in the main mmdvm group with the announcement of the newer m17 releases.
If its not this video the account also shows using the new client software in use to tx rx a m17 signal.

Just noticed that Andy has added some new M17 stuff to the dashboard code, dated 21st October, so there is movement in Pi-Star towards having this mode available in some shape or form.
I would think that a working version for all is some distance out as the code will need to mature.
