Use fan with MMDVM fitted together

Post by G1NZO »

Playing around with building hot spots
Is there any way ti=o have a Pi fan fitted onto the Pi 3B with the GPIO header extended and have
the MMDVM board fitted ontop
Or even have the MMDVM away from the Main Raspberry board

Yes, but it depends. Best done with Pi 3's and 4's: basically, get a fan with a "pass-thru" GPIO block included, ones like this:

One poss issue Ican think of with that particular solution is the fan will be pulling hot air away from the Pi's chipset and throwing it directly at the base of the mmdvm board, on which sits the STM and RF chips.

This is true
I have a small case mounted fan at this time
Is it possible to mount the Pi 3 remote from the MMDVM board ie not on top of it

Yeah you could make use of a gpio cable extender or gpio expansion card.

This is not an issue if appropriate clearance between the fan and hat are provided as well as good ventilation from any case that might be employed.

In the very nature of stacking the gpio connector. The mmdvm board is going to sit directly atop the exhaust of the fan. Prob. within a few MM of it.

The very last place you'd want to be pushing hot air is onto the MPU and transceiver chips, but whatever, your choice.
