wi-fi setup

Post by G8NSV »

I have a new install of pi-star on a 4B.
It works fine on Ethernet, and the wifi auto-AP worked.
I cannot however get it to connect to the wifi hotspot on my phone.
I have tried all manner of supposed "fixes" found with Google, non work, and pi-star refuses to connect to my phone. The phone hotspot works, as I use it with a laptop and other things.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I know the wi-fi on my Pi works as its own AP, but this is no help, I want to use my phone as the AP
Im using Pi-star 4.2.1 The kernel is 5.10.103-v7+ My Pi Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Rev 1.2
Many Thanks

Bob,

Do you find the hotspot from your phone? How are you configuring it currently?

What brand and model of phone? What operating system?

Does Pi-Star “see” the target WiFi signal coming from your phone? IOW, is the phone's WiFi SSID being broadcast listed as available to connect to on Pi-Star but won't connect?

Yes pistar sees the phone, I enter the correct passkey and it enters the correct info in the wifi config, I can see this in the expert edit screen. I have tried the wifi builder, no different. It simply wont pair with the phone. The Phone is a google pixel 6 running the latest Android updates.
I am at a loss really.

So once the Wi-Fi data is in the file, reboot the Pi (from the admin page and then power) and see if it does indeed connect, connecting right away can be a problem since once the Pi's AP/Hotspot is up, it will refuse to move channels for example.

If rebooting the Pi-Star hotspot doesn’t help, another suggestion is to change the WiFi hotspot security setting in your Pixel 6 to WPA2 only if it's currently set to WPA3/WPA2 (mixed mode).

Failing that, try rebooting the Pixel 6 if you haven’t tried already,

That's a really good suggestion, WPA2/3 mixed mode is quite a mess, even in production/enterprise environments.
