Firmware upgrading from v1.4.7 to v1.4.8

Post by waynedc »

I am having an issue getting my ZumSpot firmware on a Pi-Zero-W upgraded from v1.4.7 to v1.4.8. I get the following result in SSH at the end of a "SUDO PISTAR-ZUMSPOTFLASH RPI" command:

Flashing your rpi modem complete, press any key to reboot your Pi-Star System...Total wall clock time: 2.7s

My Pi-Star dashboard continues to indicate the FW is v1.4.7. Updates and upgrades are the latest and the device has been shut down and rebooted. This firmware update has been attempted several times with the same result. Any assistance is appreciated.

Hi Wayne, are you sure your modem board is a ZUMspot (typically purchased from HRO)? There are clone boards that look similar but require different firmware.

I am positive as that is where I purchased it. It is the Zumspot and Pi-Zero kit they sell. It is the only one I have.

I'm guessing your hotspot was working fine on v1.4.7. If that's true, one further thing I can think of is to try using a different power supply (steady 2.5A output is key), then perform a hotspot shutdown, power off, and restart, and then try the firmware update again. Also, in general I trust using a standalone SSH app like Termius or PuTTY more than the Expert Editor's SSH Access window, which is an implementation of Shellinabox, and can sometimes be a little moody.

Thank you Toshen,

Yes, the Zumspot works great on v1.4.7. No complaints. I use Putty already for all ssh in to the device. I will confirm good power and try it again.

I do not know what the highlighted text is in my original post, but it mentions a failure. Is that a normal response at the end of the "sudo zumspotflash rpi" process?

The first two highlighted lines are normal. The final one is where things went off the rails. I just re-ran sudo pistar-zumspotflash rpi on my hotspot. The final lines were:

When I pressed a key, it rebooted.

At this point, things are beyond my knowledge level. If you're on Facebook, you may want to ask on the ZUMspot group. You might also want to contact HRO, as I guess it's possible you have a unit with an issue or defect that is preventing the new firmware from being written.

Good luck! I hope you get it sorted out soon.

Thanks Toshen,

I do see a difference in yours vrs my results. It appears you are using a Pi3 as that is what was detected. I am using the Pi Zero W as it was correctly detected.

Appreciate the info.

The "Failure to Init device" line tells the tail. the Pi isn't seeing the MMDVM board via the upgrade pins (38 and 40). If those are properly connected between the Pi and MMDVM, my bet is the board has an issue.

When I ran the Jumbospot group on Facebook we'd see this weekly, those boards usually didn't come with those 2 pins connected and users would wonder why they couldn't upgrade..

Good catch, but makes no difference. Just re-ran the same sequence on my ZUMspot mobile hotspot, which uses a RPi Zero W:
