There are three parts to activating the display - 1. What display 2. Where is the display connected and 3. Which format.
I can find the settings in MMDVM.ini for 2 and 3, but not for #1. What parameter activates the presence of the Nextion display?
I understand Modem and Nextion settings in MMDVM.ini. This problem is occurring on Stretch Raspian on a Raspberry Pi 3B+.
What turns the Nextion on and off in MMDVM.ini
Re: What turns the Nextion on and off in MMDVM.ini
As in the FB-Group already asnwered: The Raspberry 3+ (Stretch) isn't handling correct the USB status.
That is the reason Pi-Star is still bèta for RPi3+ / Stretch

Solved! I was changing the wrong MMDVM.ini file. /dev/ttyUSB0 is where it is.
