Global disable APRS

Post by VK7HSE »

Would it be possible to include a global setting that would set all APRS to 0 so that it's totally disabled?

I'll explain my reasoning, I run the tier2 server T2TAS and the amount of failed duplicate callsign login attempts from those who run multiple hotspots causes quit a lot of unnecessary traffic to the T2 system. This is almost like a minor DDoS as traffic from the hotspots just continues infinitely until it gets the response it wants.

This also has a negative impact on pi-star because it fills the logs with failed connection attempts and once the ram disk fills up the dashboard can no longer update as the process required get stuck in an infinite loop of reading the logs (I believe that this is related to the high CPU usage from grep)

So hence if it's possible to include a global aprs disable setting would certainly benefit those who run multiple hotspots and for those who don't want their position data being populated into the aprs-is system.

Thoughts?

Good point Scott.

I've never really given thought to the possibility the many setups I have running here causing problems with its continued attempts at connecting, when one of the other installs got there first.

Good advice, be friendly to ur choosen T2 server and set only one install
as (master)

Multiply it over several connections and you'll see what I mean...

Yes. That's going to be a great deal of traffic in rejected link requests.

Thats not a bad idea, there is also an issue, well not really an issue, so much as a lack of understanding too, since every one of the major services has its own APRS implementation just in case its running on its own, including all the cross-over services too, plus the network like BrandMeister also pass out any position information they can find.

In short - there are a few things I would like to add in soon.

1. Global APRS disable, yes I think thats a good idea.
2. Remove the wide choice of APRS hosts and only provide the regional rotate hosts - we added the whole list to give you all a good choice, but I am starting to feel like that is more of a problem than a help.

I'm going to be super busy for the next 7 days or so, but after that, there will be a few changes coming, including finishing up the work to make RC3 a release and setting the retirement date for 3.4
