2 D-Star HTs and 1 JumboSpot

Post by KI7UXT »

Have an issue I am trying to trouble shoot and need some guidance. I have a Icom ID-51A+2, Kenwood TH-D74A, and Jumbospot running a pi0 v 3.4.17 and mmdvmhshat v1.4.17. Both the 51 and 74 are programmed with DV Repeater, Dup-, and 0.0 offset. The 74 works fine on the Jumbospot, I can change reflectors, have qsos on REF001C/030C as an example. With the 51, I can change reflectors, do an echo test, but when asking for radio checked on REF001C/030C nobody can hear me.

In pi-star configuration page, D-Star, node type=public.

I can not figure out why the 51 is not working. I ran the update in SSH sudo pistar-update, and notice some errors (see below, there are 3 http errors and some failure to loads as well). Could this be the issue ? Any help to trouble shoot would be greatly appreciated.

Still have not been able to get both HTs to work with the Jumbospot, only the TH-d74a.
I have a Icom ID-51A+2, Kenwood TH-D74A, and Jumbospot running a pi-0 v 3.4.17 and mmdvmhshat v1.4.17, freq 434.000. Both the 51 and 74 are programmed with DV Repeater, Dup-, and 0.0 offset, and freq 434.000. The 74 works fine on the Jumbospot, I can change reflectors, have qsos on REF001C/030C for example. With the 51, I can change reflectors, do an echo test, however, when I key up it appears nobody can hear me. Tried multiple time and requested radio checks on REF001C/030C. My call is also not showing upon on REF030C status page. If I grab the 74 and key up, all works fine.
In pi-star configuration page, D-Star, I do have node type=public.
RPT1 is set to KI7UXT B; RPT2 is set to KI7UXT G, on both the 51A and 74A. After I link to, for example, REF030C, I move the TO: field to "Use Reflector". As stated above the 74A works as it should. Its just the 51A. Can you have the same call sign on both HT's,
Any guidance on how I can get the 51 to also work would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The errors when running the 3.4.17 update are normal. We're in an awkward situation: 3.4.17, which runs the old Raspbian Jessie, is beginning to run into out-of-date issues, but 4.0.x, which runs the newer Raspbian Stretch, is not quite ready for general release (the release candidate has been in a bit of limbo for the past few months, with only minor updates). Hopefully, 4.0.x will get finished sometime in the near future, and then 3.4.17 will be retired.

I think you may need to focus on your 51A for the source of the issue you're encountering. I don't have that radio, so I can't offer you any suggestions, but the fact that the TH-D74A (which I also have) is running fine suggests there is something going on with the was the 51A is set up.

I know that when I was configuring my TH-D74A, a couple things were important: using DR mode, not DV mode, and once I'm linked to a reflector, putting it into UR: CQCQCQ mode by using the Destination Select menu, select Reflector, and then selecting Use Reflector. It sounds like you're doing both of those.

One thing you might want to try is actually programming a CQCQCQ channel into your radio that you can switch to once your linked to a reflector: via Destination Select > Direct Input (URCALL): UR CALL: CQCQCQ. Note that with the TH-D74A, it was important to NOT use the Local CQ option for talking after linking to a reflector or repeater using a hotspot; although this will populate the URCALL field with CQCQCQ like the other options, it also will change the RPT2 field, with the consequence that others will not be able to hear you.

Thanks Toshen for the reply. I will try programming a CQCQCQ in the 51A to see if that works. Appreciate the guidance.

You need to set the ID51 upper window to “Use Reflector”. If set to just “CQCQCQ” it won’t go out, the “CQCQCQ” on an Icom is for local use on a repeater.

That update error can be fixed. Just change the jessie-backports entry in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/jessie-backports.list to read:

deb http://archive.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main contrib non-free

Those backports aren't getting any more updates, but that will at least let the regular Raspbian system files update.
