Just a quick followup on this.... It was Microsoft that caused the whole issue. Surprise, surprise! Here is the relevant article where I found the solution:

If anyone else is still running Windows 7 and can't access their shared folders and files from a Linux system, this is worth looking at. Once I applied the patch, I can reach the Windows shares now.
But I learned a lot about Master Browsers in this process. That LanScan program is very handy to find out where they are on your LAN.
Funny how we're all IT experts now, but that had to happen once computers and radios merged. Good times indeed.
