iphone connection via USB

A stable connection to the iphone 13x hotspot seems to be a lost cause currently. Has anyone been able to establish a solid connection via USB? My efforts so far have failed.

This 2014 link gives instructions for pairing a RPi via USB to an iPhone 5, but the procedures still work in 2020 with my iPhone X. It is command-line based, so you'll need to ssh into your pi.
