Audio through the Dashboard

Wires-x software does it, why not the Dashboard? Just open the Dashboard and listen in. 73

The dashboard's "Gateway Activity" section, where the call history is displayed, is just parsing the /var/log/pi-star/MMDVM*.log file. If you were to run the command "tail -f /var/log/pi-star/MMDVM*.log", you would see what the web page is working from.

Wires-X systems are designed to be dual mode analogue and digital, they have the hardware available to transcode in both directions; MMDVM and MMDVM based hotspot boards to not have the hardware, they simply pass through the already digital data RF<->Network or Network<->RF.
