where is log of packets dropped by the firewall?
2 what firewall rule would i add and where to allow traceroutes to and from pi-star

Not really a Pi-Star but linux networking questions.
For logging check /var/log/syslog
For the firewall rules there is plenty information on the internet about configuring iptables but be aware that if you wish to traceroute to your host from an external address then in addition to the iptables rules you will also need to enable port forwarding for both UDP (unix based source hosts) and ICMP (Windows based hosts) in the router to the pi-star host. Realistically there is no point as if you can traceroute to your public IP address then it's just one more hop to your pi-star host.
