Reflector "Not Linked' Issue

Post by wx9kvh »

Good morning to all! Hope all are well and staying safe during these crazy times!

Decided to get back into DSTAR, so I blew the dust off the spare hotspot and am experiencing a small issue(or so I think).

I am noticing a bit of an issue with DSTAR. I have it set to auto connect to a specific reflector(have tried many thinking it was an issue with a specific one, and its all of them I've tried). Every morning it is in a "not linked" state, but when I ping it with the information request, it tells me that its linked, but the dashboard shows that its not. When I send the link command, it does nothing, when I attempt to connect to a different reflector, it says its connected, but the dashboard still shows not linked. The only way I'm able to get it to link back up is to send the unlink command followed by a link command. Even when I am on the admin page, a quick request to link fails and I have to request and unlink followed by a link to get it to work.

I'm assuming its losing its connection due to the services being stopped for the nightly updates, just curious if there is a way to resolve this so that it connects again to the default selected reflector after the nightly updates.

I am on 4.1.6 / 20220115 / FW 1.5.2.

Thanks for any and all help!

You need to set the startup reflector and enable it in the settings. When the nightly update happens it shuts down the service/process, so when that service/process "starts" back up it will connect to the reflector that is set. Expert->ircddbgateway, startupX=1. Where X is the network number.
I believe that's how I have it set, see below :

reflector1 : REF019 C
atStartup1 : 1
reconnect1 : 0

Well, when you manually kick off an update does it connect to the reflector when the update is finished? If yes, then its not the nightly updates that are causing your issue.
After a manual update, it does not connect back to the reflector automatically, I have to unlink it and then relink it.

K, what happens when you reboot the hotspot?

Also, what happens when you power off the hotspot for at least 10 minutes and then power it up?

Does it reconnect then?
Rebooting it does the same thing, as well as leaving it unplugged and plugging it back in. I tried these things earlier hoping for some change in results but no joy.

Reboot, then view the ircDDBGateway log, and then paste it between code tags into a post.

Specifically interested to see messages marked as E: (errors).
Here is what the log shows, no errors that I can see.

Just for giggles I switched things to REF001 C and this is what the log shows after a fresh reboot :

What release of pistar are you running? Is it the current uptodate release?

In a earlier release a while back the dashboard would only poll the status when it was first, or rebooted or a change of reflector was initiated. Restarting services didnt poll for info to update the status field.

I am on Pi-Star : 4.1.6 / Dashboard : 20220115 as of this morning. The problem is that even after a reboot it will not connect to the reflector(that I’m aware of) as I don’t hear anything coming thru(on REF001C)which is normally very busy. I have to send the unlink command, then send the link command for whatever REF I want to be on before I hear anything.

Still doesn't report any errors. Also its odd that it would report inactivity when its a server you haven't connected to recently.

I've seen a recent post where a user said he experienced a similar issue, he ended up starting over on a fresh image and the startup connection problems were not happening. I recommend you do the same. I wouldn't not import your current settings from a backup just to eliminate if its a setting somewhere that was changed that shouldn't of been changed.
I will give this a go tomorrow and report back with my findings, thanks for all the help!

Yeah its worth a try, an admin tested it this afternoon with that specific reflector and no issues were encountered, so I'm not sure whats going on.
Interesting thing I’ve noticed the last two mornings in a row. It for some reason seems to have stayed connected to the reflector. And multiple times yesterday while I was in the car most of the day, it stayed connected even after I walked away with my phone and came back. Nothing has changed that I can see. Maybe I’ll continue keeping an eye on it and if it becomes an issue again I’ll reset it. It probably needs it. Haven’t reset it since Feb of 2020.

Thanks again for all your guys help. It is very much appreciated and the software keeps getting better and better!
