TETRA hotspot

Post by S58SMS »

Dear All,

on social media's pages/groups, forums etc. I have seen some people asking, if there is any possibility in the future, that there would be implemented TETRA hotspot, which would be crosslinked to Brandmeister? Some HAM operators in the World tried to crosslink it via dmr+tetra mobile stations, with some quite expensive procedures/hardware, which is different thing, but it works. You can check it up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MXU791o8sk&t=87s

At the beginning we have to be clear, that TETRA works on two different modes:
- TRUNKED MODE
- DIRECT MODE

TRUNKED MODE has additional option, that traffic is encrypted, and there are different flaws of encryption. Direct mode has option of end to end encryption. Of course, TETRA can be in CLEAR mode in trunked or direct mode. DMO can be in repeater mode too. Because of that reasion, on the market exist CLEAR TETRA STATIONS and TEI STATIONS, for mostly federal use, and is not legal to own it. Of course in a HAM world, any kind of encryption is not allowed, so the operator has to own ONLY Clear TETRA, that work on a HAM frequency, specified by country/local laws. Some counties, like Australia, Italy, Austria, Romania etc. has even TETRA Repeaters on HAM band (example: https://www.repeaterbook.com/row_repeat ... type=Tetra). So, please in the disscusion bellow, i would like we skip disscusions around laws, encryption and so on, because it's different from country to country and operator is responsible where to work and use radio terminals and frequencies.
Many operators from UK, Australia and Europe own tetra terminals for ham use, mostly for testing in direct mode terminal to terminal, so I'm shure it would be a big thing to open them up to "world ham network", if it's possible to implement tetra hotspots, crosslinked to brandmaister. Tetra has some own specialities, so it's interesting for those operators, who are curios of discovering new things in digital radio world.

Thank you for the disscusion.
