Have the Raspberry Pi and the MMDVM board separate from each other
Not far about 6 inches away
Tried with ribbon cable but didn't work
Is there a GPIO expansion board available that would allow this

Both Pimoroni and Pihut sell gpio extension boards n cable adapters. You might find something there that suits.
