Things have improve there somewhat.

Later chineese radios from Retevis and Anytone give you the ability to change TG, TS, Freq. C/code from the radios front panel.
But yeah, most of the real cheap chineese radios are still as you describe.

I've watched a could if videos on CPS software and it's not that difficult to understand. I link the new Radioddity GD-88 and clones also the mobile version DB-25D not bad for ~200 £$€

Didnt know there as a new GD model.
their GD77 was a great li'll radio once you added the extra 3rd party firmware which made it v. versitle.

By all accounts the DB-25D is pretty good along with the GB-88
