Expected data usage (DMR)

Post by K8GI »

We recently replaced a Motorola DMR repeater with a PiStar where the latter is configured for DMR only. An interesting change in data usage was noted. The Motorola's data throughput was about 12 kb/sec per TS and only when one or both of the slots was active. The PiStar uses significantly more -- even when the repeater is not active. Is this expected? If so, what is the nature of this activity and why is it required? A packet capture is the next step but hoping someone might have some information first. (Data is not "free" -- particularly if we allow the PiStar to fail-over to cellular if we lose the ethernet/fiber WAN.)

Other than the overnight maintenance and update scripts that run in the early hrs theres very little else that the install will be polling for, other than what it wouls be getting from the connected server.

Also remember your now connecting using mmdvm protocol which might go to explain differences in the data stream.

OK, thank you very much. Not sure what "MMDVM Protocol" is. I thought this was just "plain pl' DMR." Maybe we have some security issues here. We'll look further to try understand what's going on and and the pi will be isolated in the interim. TU!
