Pi-Star DMR Net Turns Red and Won't Connect to Private XLX Reflector

Post by KN4BQX »

I am trying to set-up a private XLX Reflector (no calling home), but each time I key up, the DMR Net Status turns from green to red and won't connect to the private XLX reflector.

Setup: I successfully made another XLX reflector (with calling home enabled) along with having Pi-Star connect to it. For the Private XLX, I started with a fresh image and followed directions from N5AMD's page (https://n5amd.com/digital-radio-how-tos ... reflector/). All necessary ports are properly open on my router and, as far as I can see and compare, both my private and regular XLX reflectors are behaving the same and showing the same status updates, so I don't think there is an issue there.

For the Pi-Star, I am using a copy of that same image that works on the calling home XLX reflector and using the same settings as a baseline for Pi-Star, just modifying to specifically fit needs of the the private XLX reflector. I followed these directions (http://pi-star.blogspot.com/2020/05/man ... ow-to.html) to manually update the DMR_Hosts.txt and ran an update. From there, I can see my private XLX name/number, select it, and apply the changes. This is where I run into issues. As soon as I key up, the Pi-Star Network Status DMR Net goes from green to red.

Subsequently, the private XLX log shows no evidence of the pi-star or radio trying to connect to it.

I am at a loss here, any guidance or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Here are the logs from my Pi-Star connected to the XLX (Calling Home) Reflector. Notice it receives the "network voice:"

And here are the logs from the Pi-Star that is connected to the Private XLX. Notice no response from the "network voice:"

So for some reason, the pi-star is not connecting to the private XLX.

Attached are screenshots from my Pi-Star Configuration page and Dashboard:

Some additional information:

I rebuilt the pi-star with a fresh image and ran an update & upgrade. I successfully connected it to my Calling Home XLX reflector. I then changed the DMR_Host.txt file and ran an update to add in the private XLX reflector.

After selecting the private XLX, I go to the Dashboard and key up on a module; the DMR Net immediately turns red. I did a sanity check and connected this Pi-Star successfully to the calling home XLX, no problem. I only get the red DMR Net when keying up on the private XLX.

Does anyone have insight or suggestions?

I remember I did answer, but the post somehow disappeared.

Is your XLX reflector named with letters like XLXABC by any chance? DMRGateway only supports numbers, like XLX123, otherwise it crashes.

Thanks for the reply!

XLX Reflector is XLX825, no letters

I've tried a combination of the "XLX###" in the DMR_Hosts.txt files, followed by running HostFilesUpdate.sh in cd /usr/local/sbin. All with no luck, but slightly varying results.

"XLX825"
-disappears on XLX Master box
-Dashboard DMR Net stays GREEN when keying up
-Side Dashboard shows "XLX025 A"
-Voice says "Connected to XLX025 A"
-For some reason, this one connects to 025, not 825

"XLX_825"
-stays on XLX Master box
-Dashboard DMR Net turns RED when keying up
-Side Dashboard shows "Not Linked"
-No voice
-I also tried using the Local IP in Pi-Star DMR_Hosts.txt, not Public IP, since I am on the same network. Same result, Red, Not Linked, No voice.

"XLX-825"
-changes to "XLX_825" on XLX Master box
-Dashboard DMR Net turns RED when keying up
-Side Dashboard shows "XLX Not Linked"
-No voice

My text in the DMR_Hosts.txt is as follows:
XLX825 0000 [public IP address] passw0rd 62030
XLX_825 0000 [public IP address] passw0rd 62030
XLX-825 0000 [public IP address] passw0rd 62030

I chose the number 825 since it is not used in the DMR Reflector List.

Any thoughts?

In your pi-star setting for DMR I am assuming you are using xlx master?

Did you add 2 more digits SSID after your DMR ID?

XLX does not like 9 digits ID, make sure 7 digits ID only. Just set SSID to none.

Did you try other XLX?

That is all I can think of. GL & 73, Kit

Kit,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, using XLX Master with a 7-digit DMR ID, SSID set to NONE.

Yes, tried another XLX and it works fine with others, just not with the private XLX.

On the Pi-Star, everything looks good from the standpoint of the radio connecting to the Pi-Star; I verified all the frequencies, TG, etc are appropriately programmed in the radio. However, each time I key up, the DMR NET turns from green to red.

Still at a loss...

As I was writing that last comment up, it looks like I got connected!

However, I need to find out how to keep the the XLXHosts.txt in the root directory auto-updating the XLXHosts.txt file in /usr/local/etc/. It works for DMR_Hosts.txt, but it doesn't with XLXHosts.txt. I've searched and had no luck finding an answer.

Any idea how to get XLXHosts in root to stay?

You can not create new XLX entries via the /root file, only update existing ones. In other words, your reflector needs to be public, registered.
