Post by Vk3bug »

Support/images for Raspberry Pi Os bookworm would be much appreciated.
This is needed for the new pi 5.

Working on it, but it's part of a much larger set of changes.

If you have a chance Andy, it would be very interesting to know what it is about Bookworm that makes these larger set of changes necessary.

The way current Pi-Star images are created, this has been a problem brewing since the first release of Pi-Star, but I've pushed through it, I can make a new build that will work on Pi 5 boards if that is really desired, but it's going to be the same old stuff, just warmed over with an OS upgrade, and that has to stop and get properly fixed at some point.

So this is the new dashboard code?

The two things are not exactly linked, I'm trying to get all the various ills of the past cured.

New image creation using a sane toolkit that will actually make repeatable builds, that can also be open sourced.
Improved build/release mechanism for the various software Pi-Star is made from - this makes it MUCH easier to make Pi-Star run on anything that isn't RasPiOS or even a Raspberry Pi Foundation board.

The above parts are already done (I say done.... they are getting worked on still, but they exist and work).

The new dashboard... well it's coming along...

As soon as it's functional I'm sure I'll have more to say about it. I might entertain releasing a last 4.x build (4.2.x I guess) that is Bookworm, with the new build binary distribution and the old dashboard - but this feels more like sticking a plaster on it than actually fixing the issue.

Thanks for the explanation Andy, I only wish that my skill set was sufficient to volunteer to help, however I am not at all knowledgeable enough. I don't want to poison the well.

Cheers for the update Andy!
Looking forward to those changes sounds like they may also enable containerization (such as docker) which would be huge for myself.

Since there is a need to get bookworm supported (so that you can boot Pi 5 units for example), I'm going to stage out the work on bookworm a little.

So expect a 4.3.x train with the Bookworm OS, but the rest of Pi-Star as you know it, and then I can get to work on a 5.x train with a new dashboard in it. This way you all get your Pi 5 units going, and I can focus where it matters.
