Well I went shopping to see if I could pick up a zero 2w and ended up with a Canakit pi4 starter kit.
Now my question is can I setup and operate it from my laptop or do I need to buy a keyboard and mouse and screen now to?
If it's possible for a dummy to work things from a laptop hdmi plug can someone put it in simple to understand steps before I fork out more money?

All the Pi can be setup and run headless. You can run it from your pc via terminal or you can run it with a desktop on the Pi using VLC. After the system is up and running from SD card etc.

Do a google search setting up Pi headless.

Pistar image is designed to run headless. Just power the pi.

Everything is done via the web browser once you have the pi connected to ur home network.
