In order for your hotspot to connect to your iPhone on startup you have to be on the "Personal Hotspot" screen on your iPhone, even if you have the "allow others to join" turned on (green). I think that the SSI goes to sleep if nothing is connected to it, and it has to be woke up.
I did try the TX and RX invert, no good. I will clarify that I am listening on a FM HT, and I do not hear the chirping sounds of the digital info when I am able to key thru my reflector. Also (pistar- findmodem) didn't reveal anything new. Will try watching the live logs next

Have you tried changing from terminal mode to access point before you link to a reflector or a least when there is no activity on the reflector? I have a Raspberry Pi 3B+ running Pi-star. I believe that I have solved it. I have my LAN setup with 2 Linksys E1200 routers. One of them is the main router that is the DHCP server, and the other is just setup as an access point.
