Re: Is it possible to pre-configure user names and passwords before first boot?
The username and password is rooted in the base OS. So yes you can by following any online guide to change those with access to writing the sd card directly.
The freqs, modes etc. The only way i can think of doing that would be to use the backup feature on a live image.

Locally...
tail -f /var/log/pi-star/MMDVM*.log
or using SSH across ur network...
ssh [email protected] tail -f /var/log/pi-star/MMDVM*.log
If that doesnt work for you...
first ssh into ur pistar instance, then use the tail command above.

Re: D-Star Gateway CQ
Regards what you have listed in ur radio. If the rptr and its ip isnt listed in the host files there is no way knowing where that rptr is on the web and so no way to connect to it.
Look at the ircddbgateway config, youll see there that you can enter ircddb info (after you signed up) or quadnet ...

Yes and no.
Its not the same as icoms implementation, but it is possible to connect in-bound to a dstar rptr.
There are a couple of provisions though...

Nothing is impossible to actually say no, but some things are just simpler.
