Trying to setup a Ritron DTX 160 with Pi-Star

Post by AK7AN »

Looking for info on setting up a Ritron DTX 160 to use with Pi-Star. I have a Raspberry Pi3 B+ running the latest version for that build. I am capable of build the cabling I need to make the connection between the two. My question is, can I build a serial cable that would operate the rig? Would that work using a USB serial converter? What modem setting would be needed in Pi-Star? Or. would it be easier to run a STM_DVM_PiHAt, and run it that way?
If you have any info on this Plz let me know.
Thanks
Ed

Im not aware of this radio, but from what i see in a quick internet search the dtx160 it's a single freq. headless basic transceiver. You'll need to interface a MMDVM modem of some sort as pistar software doesn't connect directly to a transceivers serial port, the serial port looks to be used for radio setup using the manufacters configuration software. Pistar instead connects through a MMDVM modem board then interfacing to the radios audio in/out ptt etc.

So a Pi Zero w and a MMDVM board would make this setup run. I have the software to program. I suppose that a JSLM or a JSLM2 radio would work the same way, as I have access to these radios also. Just looking for a way to free up my Icom 4100 that I have running my setup now.
Thanks

Yes, you need a MMDVM repeater board, although I realise ur not setting up a repeater. There are several types, but most today sit atop the Pi's gpio. Be mindful you don't purchase a MMDVM hotspot board, that isn't what you want in this scenario.

Again I don't know the radio you have, so the answers are generic. You will need to research more to ensure the radio permits flat unfiltered access to its audio stages both audio in/out.

Yes, all the radios I mention offer flat audio in and out. Preemphasis on or off, so it would be set to off. I wouldl like to find a source for the UHF version of these rigs, but those seem a little harder to find. I did find some US sellers on Ebay to source a MMDVM board without RF. Looks like this would be an inexpensive route for a hotspot with extended range to be stationary or portable. I plan on moving forward with this project and if successful will do a write up on post it up.
Thanks again
