Is there a way to get a hotspot to send out the gps location sent out from a dstar radio out to APRS.fi similarly how a d-star repeater will forward the gps location from a d-star radio to aprs.fi?
Correct me if I am wrong, but enabling "aprs" on the pi-star dashboard only broadcasts the Lat/Lon that is manually entered into the pi-star general config?
GPS/APRS.fi via radio
Re: GPS/APRS.fi via radio
Perhaps http://www.aprs-is.net/DStarMonitor.aspx (there is a Pi-Star section mid-page).
The main take-away is that it uses a network packet sniffer to examine outbound traffic, looking for the position information, extracts it, then creates/submits position reports to the APRS-IS network. It is primarily configured for ICOM packets and may not be compatible with Kenwood D74 packets.
The packet sniffer may also add overhead, so one may need to use one of the newer more powerful R-Pis (3B+, 4B) rather than something like a Zero.

Re: GPS/APRS.fi via radio
I have all icom radios (51A, 52A, and 5100) so I will have a look. But bottom line is pi-star in itself does not do this is my takeaway

Re: GPS/APRS.fi via radio
If you attach a serial gps device to the Pi
Pistar can make use of the location data it produces.
But remember it isnt a tracking service. Pistar wont send regular gps updates as the info is only sent out on the initial boot.
Gps data sent from your radio however does get sent out with each keyup. If its a feature and setup to do so in ur radio.

Re: GPS/APRS.fi via radio
My radio(s) are set up to send gps out (Id-51, Id-52, Id-5100) however going through a hotspot does not result in my location showing up on aprs.fi. If I key up through a dstar repeater, it does. My question was how do I get it to show up on aprs.fi going through a hotspot which it sounds like, is not possible wiht pi-star.
Re: GPS/APRS.fi via radio
I refer you back up to my prior reply... Which appears to be what those repeaters may be running. It is not packaged with Pi-Star, so you'd have to follow the instructions to add it (and hope they are compatible with Pi-Star 4.x).Ki6anr wrote: ↑Mon Feb 28, 2022 10:13 pm My radio(s) are set up to send gps out (Id-51, Id-52, Id-5100) however going through a hotspot does not result in my location showing up on aprs.fi. That'll be in ircddbgateway.Ki6anr wrote:My radio(s) are set up to send gps out (Id-51, Id-52, Id-5100) however going through a hotspot does not result in my location showing up on aprs.fi. Check in the pistar general config you have an aprs host set.
If so visit admin/expert/edit_ircddbgateway.php look down the list of settings and you should see.
Aprs-passcode
Aprs-hostname
Aprs-port
Ensure you have entries in them and they're set accordingly.
