4.3.3 is looking real good so far.
you're welcome, and thank you, getting 4.3.x out of beta has been a bit of a trial, especially around the Wi-Fi issues and a late decision to break 4.3.x away onto it's own train of bins, but this is a requirement to keep the previous stability of the older systems too.

You mentioned wifi issues. So just for a test i went to our wifi screen, scanned the available ssid's, selected one, entered the password,
saved it to a profile, generated a wpa_supplicant file and rebooted

The system came backup like the champ you created

The wifi issues have (mostly, though not entirely) related to Pi Zero 2W models.

Sent via smoke signals using my SM-G935F

Yep, these connect the Wi-Fi to the SoC differently to every other hardware design the Raspberry Pi Foundation have used, that combined with the broadcom closed source drviers that do (well who knows what), some specific features cause the Wi-Fi to drop offline, there are clashes between devices on the same bus that cause instability that make it look like the system drops briefly, regularly.

While there are documented "fixes" for this, they mostly, don't fix it, instead there is a set (yes more than one) things that you have to get lined up to stabilise it. This has been painful, really damn painful, however the path I chose to cure it (so far) seems to solve the problem with few downsides, and I have been able to target it specifically at the Pi02W without impacting other boards. I'll talk more about this all once we can prove out that it really is staying connected.

We've gone from under an hour of staying connected, through hours, and now into days, but I'm not happy until we're into weeks/months, right now that's a case of waiting to make sure that's what I see.

Hi Andy:

Amazing work and effort on this 4.3.x iteration. I cannot thank you enough!

I just upgraded one of my systems and then restored from backup. A very small item... the time zone did not restore from the backup (I think it did before).

Other than that, this seems to be working beautifully, and as you know, I have had some challenges with the MMDVM V2 protocol, so it was nice to discover that MMDVMHost is FW agnostic and seemingly works very well with V1 FW in the Repeater Builder V3 and v4 boards.

Thank you, once again!

Timezone - interesting - I'll have a look at that....

All credit for the fantastic MMDVM/MMDVMHost and associated software stacks should go to Jonathan (G4KLX) and those who support/contribute to his software projects.

Backing up configuration does not give you a file to download. It displays a bunch of gibberish. I use a custom host name for my hotspots if this helps. I call it pi-star-bm.

Anytime you change the host "mane", you need to (almost) immediately reboot to propagate that change throughout the rest of the system before you do anything else (like backing up configurations). The errors you got (e.g. "sudo: unable to resolve host pi-star-bm: Name or service not known") are indicative that you attempted to continue to use the app for other tasks before rebooting.

I have 3 pi-star hotspots (pi zero) that have run well for many years on several versions. One is set for D-Star, one for Brandmeister DMR gateway and the last is setup on TGIF. I installed 4.3.2 on all three and restored using the config from 4.2.1 and after a couple of reboots, they all worked flawlessly for days.

When 4.3.3 was released by Andy, I immediately upgraded using sudo bash, pistar-update, pistar-upgrade and all upgraded without an issue. After a day or two of using them the hotspots setup on DMR work very well but the hotspot setup on D-Star would freeze, lose contact with wifi, stop TXing but continue to show TX on the interface including amount of time. Audio was subpar with lots of drop outs but error rate would show acceptable. I reinstalled the OS on the same card but same result.

I dropped the 4.2.1 micro SD card back into the pi and it has been running without issue for 9 hours. Not sure if there is something here related specifically to D-Star as DMR works well on 4.3.3. I may try a different micro SD card this weekend to make sure it isn’t a corrupt card.

4.3.3 has the latest versions of the DV software on it, and like you I'm also seeing continuing issues with D-Star.
What we know so far, it's not ircDDBGateway, or Wi-Fi related, it's buried in MMDVMHost somewhere, I have a debug log, but it's not hugely helpful. I can tell you that Jonathan G4KLX is looking over this code currently, I see his latest commit is in this area, there is still work to do.

D-Star is the only mode impacted by this.

Wi-Fi on Pi Zero2W boards is now stable, mine are just staying connected (like all the other models).
