DMR JITTER: What does it do

In the config pages under the path... Configuration / Expert / MMDVMhost ..
There is a setting under DMR Network ( scroll way down ) called JITTER. Can someone explain what this setting does?

Its a packet buffer. Google packet jitter to help you better understand what that is first, itll make it easier to see why upping the value there might help.

I probably should have stated the question a little differently.

What symptom would I see if this is set too low?
Also what happens if it is set too long? What is degraded by the buffer being overly large?
